I’m super competitive, somewhat of a perfectionist, and I hate to lose. So when guys don’t compete, aren’t fundamentally sound in their techniques, and cause us to lose, I can be hard on them. This is a liability. Not good.
So this year I took my wife’s advise: ”Just have fun.”
I must admit, it’s paying off.
When things go wrong, it’s no big deal, and I focus on ”having fun” as I take that opportunity to teach.
As a result we are undefeated and the #1 team in the standings.
Our basic philosophy is ”Just have fun.”
I’m constantly preaching:
”Keep it positive”
“Demonstrate good sportsmanship”
”Look for opportunities to compliment others”
When things go wrong I pull that guy aside and have a ”one on one” with him. Guys respond much better to that, opposed to putting them on blast in front of all their peers.
Needless to say, things aren’t perfect. But everyday we’re out there practicing, having fun, and getting better.
I’ve seen huge progress in certain guys that are known to be argumentative, negative, and combative. I hold everyone to a higher standard and lead by example.
Unfortunately, over the course of the season, I’ve had to let 3 guys go. They were just too disruptive, argumentative, and combative. Some guys just aren’t ready. And that’s OK. There is always next year, and I’m always willing to give second, third, fourth and even fifth chances.
Wish us luck as we continue our quest towards a Championship!
